Letter: Benefit’s end has ramifications

Share

Current employees will most likely become retirees someday, and so they will not receive this expected benefit as well! One can be sure that the benefit of medical coverage after retirement was in each employee’s evaluation when they applied for their job at the city of Glendale.

Given the forecasts of increased medical coverage expenses in the future, the loss of this benefit is even larger for current employees. Now that health coverage is mandatory until the age of 65, when Medicare coverage begins, the current employees will need to reorganize their economic houses.

I predict that more employees will work longer so that they can retire closer to age 65. I also predict that this move will make it more difficult for Glendale to continue hiring top-level employees. Lastly, I predict that morale and overall productivity in the ranks of city of Glendale employees will be lower.
