Hard work pays off at Glendale High

More than 600 seniors, clad in red and black gowns, turned their tassels on Tuesday as they graduated from Glendale High School.

During the past four years, the graduating class contributed 16,000 volunteer hours into the community. Nearly 50 of them achieved a grade-point average of 4.0 or higher. And in the fall, they’ll be headed to post-high school destinations such as UCLA, USC, culinary school and the military.

“The hard work’s paid off,” said graduate Lusine Yerkanyan, 17, adding that she’ll miss the school staff, environment and school rallies, but is excited to move on.

Also among the graduates was Ana Techichil, who is part of the first generation in her family to graduate from high school.

“For my parents, it’s a great honor,” the 18-year-old said just before walking to Moyse Stadium with her classmates.

She plans to head to Pasadena City College in the fall and pursue a career in nursing.

Greg Reyes, a single father, was proud to see his son Anthony graduate after being in and out of school over the last year for health problems.

“It’s been a long road, but it’s ending with a great note,” he said, adding that his son plans to join the U.S. Army and become an oceanographic geologist.

Some classmates, Greg Reyes added, had been attending school together since kindergarten.

“Though it sucks to leave my friends as we’re going on different paths, I know that we’re going to meet again,” said graduate Daniel Choi, 17. “I’m looking forward to what life has ahead for me.”
