Raising scholarship funds for sorority members attending college and building membership are the goals of Kim Westhoff, incoming president of the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic.

Westhoff, a Glendale resident and member of the Alpha Omicron Pi, was installed during a recent meeting.

“Our group plans to continue our scholarship fundraising efforts with the annual benefit on April 8 at the Oakmont Country Club,” she said. “We will also continue providing information on sorority membership and responsibilities at our February social for high school girls and their parents, and participating in the Southern California Council of Alumnae Panhellenics.

“Additionally, we plan to increase our own membership numbers by welcoming currently unrepresented National Panhellenic Council sororities to join us,” she added.

District governor honors Lions

Lions District 4-L1 Governor Grace Joe recognized several members of the Northwest Glendale Lions Club during her official visit in September at Acapulco Restaurant.

Three Lions were recognized for longtime membership. Ross Adams was lauded for 50 years. His official title is Monarch Lion. Steve High and Vince De Santis were both honored for 30 years.

In her remarks, the governor emphasized the importance of membership, working together and legacy projects for the centennial year of Lionism, which is being observed over a three-year period.

Northwest Glendale Lions observed its 60th anniversary in July.

L’Aureole finds time to chill

Chocolate or vanilla? Butterscotch topping or chopped nuts?

These questions were heard during the summer ice cream social enjoyed by members of L’Aureole of Glendale at the Oakmont Country Club.

Kathy Kashuba, incoming president, gave members and guests a history of the club, which is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. The group has an annual fashion show and other fundraisers that support the “Zone” after-school program at the Glendale Salvation Army.

An honorary life membership was presented to longtime member Lucille Mellon and thank-you gifts went to outgoing president Mary Owen and Kashuba for helping the president throughout the year.

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a $13,000 check to Lt. Jessica Sneed of the Salvation Army for the “Zone” program. The funds came from proceeds raised at the Perennial Rose Fashion Show held in the spring.

At the November meeting, Sneed and Marlin Gálvez, also of the Salvation Army, talked about upcoming projects for the holiday season. L’Aureole members will participate in a toy drive for children. They will be matched with a specific child and given his or her wish list.

Plans for the upcoming Red Kettle kickoff breakfast were also discussed.

Then Joan Taylor, chair of this year’s Perennial Rose Fashion Show, gave a report about the event, which is scheduled for Feb. 25.

Guest speaker Joanne Linkhorst presented a program about the history and future of the former Rockhaven Sanitarium. She is a docent and historian.

Earlier this year, the group held a “Getting to Know You” meeting, chaired by Irene Goodell. Members listened to music of the 1960s era during lunch and then each member introduced themselves.

Carol Stonebraker, membership chair, initiated new members, including Ann Chadney, Pat Detwiler, Kathleen Dupree, Carol Miller, Elizabeth Nelson, Sonia Ohara and Linda Sheffield. Each was given a corsage.
