In winning its last two games, the Glendale Community College football team has turned to its running game to provide balance .
The Vaqueros have rolled up a combined 541 yards rushing in Pacific Conference American Division wins against L.A. Southwest and West L.A.
Another fine ground attack could put Glendale (3-5, 2-3 in the division) in line for a third straight win when it meets host L.A. Valley (6-2, 4-1) in a division contest at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“We ran the ball 47 times against West L.A. out of 62 plays,” said Glendale Coach John Rome, whose team picked up a 35-21 road win against West L.A. on Saturday. “We wound up with 285 yards, which is pretty good and we are trying to get more people involved.
“We’ll try to keep that going. It’s also a sign that our offensive line is playing much better, opening up holes.”
Glendale received two rushing touchdowns each from quarterback David Arriaga and Travis Custis against West L.A. Josh Martinez rushed for 100 yards in 13 carries for the Vaqueros.
Arriaga completed five of 15 passes for 77 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Deondre Dunn to help the Vaqueros put together their first winning streak of the season.
On the season, Arriaga has completed 46 of 86 passes for 521 yards. He’s thrown seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Vaqueros are tied for fourth in the division with Antelope Valley. L.A. Valley is tied for second with Pierce after recording a 39-7 home victory against Pierce on Saturday. Valley and Pierce trail Santa Monica by one game with two contests remaining. Santa Monica won the division championship last season.
Valley quarterback Patrick Tyler completed nine of 15 attempts for 148 yards and three touchdown passes to wide receiver Matthew Boudreaux against Pierce. Boudreaux caught four passes for 118 yards.
Overall, Tyler has completed 92 of 161 passes for 1,445 yards and 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Boudreaux has caught 24 passes for 451 yards and eight touchdowns.
“Valley will a big test for our team,” Rome said. “They are very good defensively, so we’ll have to limit our mistakes.”
The Vaqueros have won two straight games against the Monarchs, including a 26-17 home victory last season.
