La Crescenta’s first-ever Christmas tree lighting event will be held on Dec. 4 to help usher in the holiday season.

The large sycamore tree near the entrance of the Crescenta Valley Library at 2809 Foothill Blvd. will be decorated with 11,000 lights leading up to the event, organized by the Crescenta Valley Town Council and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich’s office.

Council President Robbyn Battles said making the event a reality was easy as asking for a Christmas gift. It all began with a phone conservation with the Antonovich’s office.

“I said, you know, how come La Crescenta doesn’t have some kind of celebration, Montrose has a beautiful parade, La Cañada has its festival of lights … it was that simple,” she said.

The event will get underway with a craft activity and snacks in the library’s community room at 5:30 p.m.

Guests can make small or large holders for battery-operated candles for $8 and $10, respectively, she said.

“We’re hoping people come and bring them to the [tree-lighting] ceremony,” Battles said.

Proceeds will benefit the Crescenta Valley Library.

The tree lighting will be held at 6:30 p.m. and will feature music by the Verdugo Hills Ward Choir and the Rosemont Middle School’s advanced string players.

Antonovich will also be in attendance, reading a children’s Christmas book titled “Snowmen at Night” in the library’s community room at 7:30 p.m.

The tree will start being decorated on Tuesday, and Battles is asking the community for ornament donations — either store-bought or homemade — which can be dropped off at a town council meeting tonight in the library’s community room or at the library through Monday.

Ornaments must be at least 6 inches in size, and they can also be dropped off at Battles’ office at 2027 Montrose Ave.

Battles added that this year’s event is just the first of more to come.

“This will become a tradition,” she said.
