Dick’s Sporting Goods to take over former Nordstrom’s space at Galleria

Dick’s Sporting Goods will be moving into Nordstrom’s former space at the Glendale Galleria later this year, a little more than a year since the upscale clothing retailer relocated to the Americana at Brand.

Officials with the sporting goods chain confirmed on Monday that a store will open sometime in fall 2015, but they would not release any further details.

The storefront where it will be moving into is actually a part of the mall that’s owned by Caruso Affiliated, which also owns the Americana.

Of Nordstrom’s three floors, the new store will occupy the first and second level, said Liz Jaeger, vice president of public relations for Caruso Affiliated.

According to an announcement posted by real estate company CBRE Retail Services, Dick’s would lease 75,725 square feet. The average location of a Dick’s Sporting Goods store is 50,000 square feet.

Philip Lanzafame, the city’s economic development director, said he’s glad to hear there will be another big-box store that sells athletic equipment and gear.

“Sporting goods, with the exception of Big 5, is not really represented in Glendale,” Lanzafame said. “I think Dick’s is a strong tenant and will anchor that part of the Galleria very, very well.”

The new Nordstrom location at the Americana at Brand opened in September 2013.

Having the Galleria space rented out again less than a year and a half after it became vacant is not unusual, Lanzafame said.

“It demonstrates the confidence that people have in Glendale, that retailers have in Glendale, to be able to pick up something like that in a really tight market,” he said.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is a Fortune 500 company that was founded in Binghamton, N.Y., in 1948.
