Glendale resident shot himself in the leg, police say

A 24-year-old Glendale man accidentally shot his own leg early Thursday while he was securing a firearm before going to bed, police said.

The man, whose identity wasn’t released, was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he underwent treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his right leg, Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot said.

He was reportedly trying to lock his Smith & Wesson handgun at about midnight inside his apartment in the 3300 block of Honolulu Avenue, when “his index finger accidentally pulled the trigger,” she said.

He was alone at the time of the shooting, but still was able to call police for help.

Officers arrived at his home and could smell alcohol on his breath, Lightfoot said. A field sobriety test was not performed at the scene.

Soon after, they removed all firearms from his home and booked them for safekeeping, she added.

A similar shooting occurred in January when a Glendale man accidently shot his wife in the shoulder as he was also securing a gun for safety.

She was also taken to Huntington Memorial and treated for the non-life-threatening injury.
