Man tries stealing child’s bike, injures himself instead
A Glendale man attempted to steal and ride off on a child’s bicycle this week, but didn’t get very far after falling and injuring himself, police said.
Wesley Hogan, 32, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to burglary and drug charges stemming from the incident in the 1200 block of Viola Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County district office.
He reportedly entered an apartment building’s subterranean garage on Monday, grabbed the child’s bicycle and began riding off. But as he tried to ride away, he fell to the ground and injured his knee, Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot said.
A witness saw the hurt man and unknowingly helped him with his injuries.
Moments later, she realized he didn’t live in the building and then noticed the bike he was riding belonged to her neighbor, Lightfoot said.
She immediately notified her neighbor and called police.
Soon after, police discovered that Hogan was on post-release community supervision for robbery, so they searched him and found a syringe, five baggies containing methamphetamine and 12 tablets of the painkiller Tramadol, she said.
He was arrested and taken into custody.
Hogan was previously convicted for drug, burglary and identity-theft-related offenses, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.
He is scheduled to appear May 8 in a Los Angeles Superior courtroom for a hearing.
