Laguna College of Art + Design is showing “Fashion, Fantasy, and the Future,” an exhibition featuring works by costume concept artist and production designer Phillip Boutte Jr.

Boutte, who served as a costume artist for “Captain America,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “A Wrinkle in Time,” among others, also worked as a production designer on several music videos for artists such as Ariana Grande, The Black Keys and Panic! At the Disco.

The gallery show highlights LCAD’s new bachelor of fine arts program in illustration in entertainment design.

Caleb Cleveland, curator of the exhibition and LCAD’s assistant illustration chairman, said the curriculum is for students to learn illustration techniques and then apply them to solving creative problems in the entertainment industry.

LCAD identified a need for the program after observing how the illustration industry had shifted from publishing to entertainment. In 2012, the college introduced an “illustration with emphasis in entertainment” program, which gained popularity among illustration students.

Last fall, the illustration major expanded its emphasis to a full BFA, and the program has enrolled over 20 students and is expected to grow.

Cleveland said he hopes the renderings on display in “Fashion, Fantasy, and the Future” will stir visitors’ imaginations.

“Phillip’s costume concepts are perfect examples of what entertainment designers do — create communication tools through art,” Cleveland said.

“By themselves, Phillip’s costume renderings are beautiful, but when you realize they are just one small facet of the overall film or television production, that these images are how one department speaks to the others, you really start to appreciate the level of discipline, dedication and talent that goes into every aspect of these fictional worlds on the screen.”

LCAD Gallery is located at 374 Ocean Ave., Laguna Beach.

Admission is free. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
