Around Town: Breast cancer prevention fundraiser set for Newport Dunes

Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort will host Stand-up for the Cure on Saturday in support of breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen Orange County.

Guests can participate in stand-up paddleboard races, a raffle and a silent auction and enjoy happy hour beer and wine, lunch and live music. Free breast or skin cancer exams also will be available.

Susan G. Komen Orange County will use 75% of the net proceeds from the event to fund local breast cancer education, screening, diagnostics, treatment and survivorship programs. The remaining 25% will go toward global breast cancer research, according to a news release.

Saturday’s event will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Newport Dunes, 1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport Beach.

Ex-state official Bill Lockyer to discuss political process at Newport event

Former California treasurer, attorney general and state legislator Bill Lockyer will speak at a presentation called “Decision 2016: An Insider’s Look at the 2016 Election Process” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 11 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.

Lockyer will provide insights into campaigns, candidates, conventions and the presidential election process. The event is presented by the Orange County chapter of the Risk Management Association.

Lockyer currently works with Brown Rudnick LLP as counsel for government law and strategies.

Admission to the presentation is $75. The Pacific Club is at 4110 MacArthur Blvd.

Political correspondent to give Vanguard commencement address

Nathan Gonzales, editor and publisher of The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report, will give Vanguard University’s commencement address on Friday at Mariners Church in Irvine.

More than 500 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students will receive their diplomas at the ceremony.

Gonzales, who graduated from Vanguard in Costa Mesa in 2000, has worked in the White House Press Office and covered House, Senate and gubernatorial campaigns.

“Nathan Gonzales is a fantastic example of where a Vanguard education can take you,” said Michael Beals, president of Vanguard University. “He has modeled our core values of truth, virtue and service and has excelled in the political realm, making a significant impact in our nation’s capital.”

Gonzales will give the commencement address at the undergraduate ceremony at 10 a.m. and the professional studies and graduate ceremony at 4 p.m. Both will be in the Worship Center at Mariners Church, 5001 Newport Coast Drive.

UCI law school to host U.S. ambassador at awards dinner and commencement

U.S. Ambassador to Belize Carlos Moreno will be honored at the UC Irvine School of Law’s 2016 Public Service Award dinner Friday at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach and will speak at the law school’s commencement ceremony Saturday at Aldrich Park on campus.

Nearly 120 students are expected to participate in the commencement from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Moreno served as a U.S. district judge in California from 1998 to 2001 and as an associate justice on the California Supreme Court from 2001 to 2011.

Mariners Christian School raises $300,000 at gala

Mariners Christian School in Costa Mesa raised more than $300,000 at its annual Spring Gala and Benefit on Friday at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach.

More than 400 guests attended.

During the event, the school shared plans for a new synthetic turf athletic field. Mariners hopes to raise $441,000 for the project and begin installing the turf during the summer.

Nominations accepted for philanthropy awards

Nominations are being accepted by the Orange County chapter of the Assn. of Fundraising Professionals for businesses, corporations, schools, nonprofits and individuals for the 2016 National Philanthropy Day Orange County Awards Luncheon, scheduled for Nov. 17 at Hotel Irvine.

The luncheon, with the theme “Giving is Always in Season,” will honor businesses, groups and individuals for their philanthropic activities.

Harbor Day School gets new leader

Following unanimous approval from Harbor Day School’s board of trustees, the Corona del Mar campus will have a new head of school, Angi Evans.

Evans, who graduated from Harbor Day in 1975 and taught fourth grade and kindergarten there, has been serving as interim head of school since July.

“The board of trustees has been impressed with Mrs. Evans’ leadership skills and passion for Harbor Day School,” board President Polly Ueberroth said in a statement. “Rarely does a school find a leader who meets all the criteria identified as important for our next head of school.”

Orange Coast symphony and singers unite for performance

Orange Coast College’s Symphony and Chamber Singers will come together to perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Costa Mesa campus’s Robert B. Moore Theatre.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 3” in C minor, while the singers will perform Mozart’s “Requiem” in D minor.

OCC to host viewing of Mercury passing the sun

The Orange Coast College astronomy department invites the public to view the passing of the planet Mercury in front of the sun — a process known as the transit of Mercury — from 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday on the west side of the college’s Adams parking lot in Costa Mesa.

Multiple telescopes will be available for the viewing, said Orange Coast astronomy instructor Jerome Fang.

Transits of Mercury occur about a dozen times each century; the most recent was in 2006, according to a news release.
