Robert “Bob” Shelton, a former Newport Beach city manager and councilman, has died at age 93.

Shelton died Nov. 30 at his Corona del Mar home from complications related to cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, according to his wife of 42 years, Barbara.

Shelton, a Pomona College alumnus, was city manager from 1956 to 1961. He was appointed to the City Council in December 1965 and was elected to the District 7 seat the following year. He served one term, ending in 1970.

Shelton received the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 1980. He served for years on the board of the Corona del Mar Residents Assn.

The association’s president, Laura Curran, credited Shelton for “his time, energy and expertise to help make Newport Beach a wonderful hometown for all of us.”

Shelton also worked for the Irvine Co. as a vice president in charge of community and public affairs. In 1992, then-Gov. Pete Wilson appointed him to the California Transportation Commission.

In addition to his wife, Shelton is survived by three children — Tom, Peter and Wendy — four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.
