The Crowd: Annual clambake event raises $145,000 for Children’s Bureau
More than 200 guests converged at the Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine for the annual summer clambake on behalf of the Children’s Bureau, one of Southern California’s oldest charitable organizations.
The Dwight Kennedy Band entertained as the crowd arrived for al fresco dining and dancing to raise funds for at-risk children and their families in Orange County.
The Children’s Bureau, with roots dating back a century in Los Angeles, began as an early adoption agency. In modern times, it has evolved into a resource center providing a variety of programs, including in-home counseling, parental education, health, employment counseling, foster care and adoption.
The late Donna and John Crean of Newport Beach were champions of the cause and instrumental in creating an Orange County chapter, serving children and families locally. The Crean Foundation carries on the legacy today as presenting sponsor of the annual clambake fundraiser.
The foundation is joined by donors R-T Specialty, Samsung, Capitol Group Companies Inc., Change A Life Foundation, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Disneyland Resort and many more.
This season the event honored Kevin Prewett Sr., representing corporate donors Ingram Micro Inc. and local philanthropist Peggy Goldwater Clay, formerly of Newport Beach and now residing in Palm Desert. Their efforts helped to raise an impressive $145,000 for Children’s Bureau programs.
Each year in O.C., the Children’s Bureau assists some 6,000 at-risk children and parents.

South Coast Plaza Hosts Festival of Children
September is National Child Awareness Month, and the Festival of Children Foundation is presenting its 15th annual event spotlighting children’s charities in Orange County at South Coast Plaza.
Sandra Segerstrom Daniels, founder and executive director of the foundation and managing partner at South Coast Plaza, has invited representatives from more than 75 Orange County nonprofits benefiting the health and well-being of local children to come together in a cooperative effort showcasing their goals. Many of O.C.’s most vital children’s charities, including Children’s Hospital of Orange County, CASA, Childhelp, Make a Wish Foundation, Project Hope Alliance, Casa Teresa and Western Youth Services, are among the nonprofits participating.
Some of the highlights of the monthlong festival at South Coast Plaza include the display of 13 amazing structures made entirely out of canned goods, which will be disassembled and the items donated to the Orange County Food Bank. There will be back-to-school fashion shows and craft activities every Saturday afternoon in Carousel Court featuring LEGO demonstrations, and every Friday in September, the Corner Bakery will host a Mommy and Me Tea at 11 a.m. for interactive discussions concentrating on home safety, nutrition, vehicle safety and more.

A New Mariners Club Debuts
Super sailor Wayne Harvey has been charged with creating a new Mariners Club within the Balboa Bay Club family in Newport Beach.
Recently, Harvey and team launched the BBC Mariners with the first Balboa Bay Club Harbor 20 International, attracting 25 racers and crew in 14 boats representing Division A and Division B sailors.
Participants came representing all yachting skill levels, and boats participated from the Balboa Bay Club as well as five major yacht clubs in Newport, including the Balboa Yacht Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Lido Isle Yacht Club, American Legion Yacht Club and UCI Sailing Assn.
After the race, trophies for both divisions: 1st place A-Division, David Camerini and Leslie Kuyama (UCISA); 2nd place A-Division, Robert Kinney and John Whitney (NHYC); 3rd place A-Division, Gary Thorne (BYC) and Dan O’Sullivan (ALYC). 1st place B-Division was awarded to Carter Ford (LIYC/NHYC) and Nancy Green (BBC), 2nd place B-Division to John and Chase Horton (NHYC), and 3rd place B-Division to the McLaughlin family.
