Corona del Mar’s TaeVeon Le commits to Harvard

Corona del Mar High’s TaeVeon Le has what it takes to play for an Ivy League school, the smarts and athletic ability. His football coach, Dan O’Shea, believes Le can also offer more after his playing days.

“I hope he becomes our president one day!” O’Shea said in a text message.

Le’s chances of leading the U.S. increased after the senior committed to Harvard’s football program on Wednesday. Of any college in the country, Harvard has educated the most U.S. presidents, eight in all.

Le, who has a weighted 4.2 grade-point average, said he chose Harvard because of its academics and rich tradition.

“Me and my mom sat down and we discussed what we’re looking for and Harvard filled a lot of those requirements, and we decided to pull the trigger and commit,” said Le, who also had offers from four other Ivy League schools — Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia and Princeton — that are part of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. “It’s definitely a little bit [of stress] off the shoulders. I can focus more on the season.”

Le, a 6-foot-4, 240-pounder, is having another strong season as a wide receiver. In four games, he has 20 receptions for 378 yards and four touchdowns and the Sea Kings are 3-1.

A year ago, Le broke almost every CdM single-season record, finishing with 78 catches for 1,294 yards and 22 touchdowns. Colleges began to recruit the big and strong pass catcher, as he received offers from Iowa State, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Air Force, UNLV, Hawaii and Army.

Le is nearing CdM’s career record for receiving yards, as he is 69 yards away from taking down Bo St. Geme’s mark of 2,113 yards. While he has put up those numbers as receiver, Le said he’s going to Harvard as a tight end.

He plans to study business. As for his aspirations years after Harvard, Le said he would consider running for the presidency of the U.S. if the opportunity presented itself.

“This country is always looking for new leadership and a new direction to go,” said Le, whose mother is Vietnamese and father is African-American.

An, Le’s mother, said she is very proud of her son.

“He’s worked very hard in the classroom and on the field,” said An, who raised Le as a single mother and became an attorney. “Going to Harvard is an amazing opportunity for him to continue to pursue what he loves, being a scholar athlete. It’s going to be hard to let my baby go. But I’m excited for him and his future.”

CdM’s Humphreys receives first offer

John Humphreys’ first offer has come from the college football program his older brother plays for as a middle linebacker.

Duke has offered Humphreys, a 6-5, 205-pound sophomore receiver and strong safety, said O’Shea. Ben Humphreys is a junior with the Blue Devils.
