College Roundup: OCC men’s volleyball easily wins

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Grossmont

The No. 1-seeded Pirates advanced to the state final four for the ninth time in 10 seasons with a 25-16, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14 win in the Southern California Regional playoffs on Friday at OCC.

Jordan Hoppe had 22 kills and Justin Kam added 18 as the Pirates (19-1) won their 18th straight match.

Grossmont ends its season 6-11.

OCC will meet an opponent to be determined at Los Angeles Pierce College in the semifinals on Thursday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 12, Loyola Marymount 0

Senior goalkeeper Annika Nelson made nine saves to record the second shutout in UC Irvine history in the regular-season finale at UCI on Friday.

UCI’s other shutout was a 14-0 triumph over Occidental on March 8, 2013.

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters (21-6) have won 12 in a row and the Big West Conference regular-season champions are the top seed in the conference tournament, beginning Thursday at UC Davis.

No. 21 LMU is 12-14.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 11, Vanguard 3

Tanner Perry was one for one with one run batted in and Josh Weeks had a hit and an RBI for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Vanguard (28-18, 16-9 in conference) is tied for first place.

TMU, which has won eight straight, is 26-18, 14-11.

SOFTBALL

Orange Coast 4, Saddleback 2

MISSION VIEJO – Briana Covarrubias was two for three with a double, run batted in and stolen base to lead the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Carlie Chaulsett-Utley allowed two runs on seven hits to improve to 6-11 for OCC (8-27, 5-14 in conference), which has won two straight to match its longest winning streak of the season.

OCC lost its first two meetings with the Gauchos by a combined score of 20-3.

Saddleback is 20-15, 10-8.

OCC plays host to Rio Hondo on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Doubleheader

ROCKLIN – Visiting Vanguard split at William Jessup, winning the second game, 6-0, after falling in the opener, 1-0, in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday.

In Game 2, Kaitlin Estes was two for four with a triple, four runs batted in and two stolen bases to lead the Lions (42-10, 17-5 in conference), who had already clinched the GSAC title.

Taylor Wilson, Tatiana Tabizan and Cassie Ballswick had two hits apiece for Vanguard, for which Courtney Thornhill threw a seven-hit shutout to improve to 15-3.

In Game 1, Vanguard managed just one hit, a third-inning single by Wilson.

Vanessa Dwyer allowed one run on six hits in six innings to absorb the loss. She is 16-5.

William Jessup is 16-17, 12-10.
