CdM football team volunteers on skid row

When you mention the Corona del Mar High football team on a Friday, you always expect something positive to happen.

You mostly hear about what the Sea Kings do on the field, which is a lot of winning, but it’s their contributions off the field that mean the most to the coaches.

While the season opener is six weeks away, the Sea Kings teamed up for a great cause last Friday.

Twenty-five players went to skid row in downtown Los Angeles to learn about the issues affecting the homeless and to help clean the streets and feed those less fortunate. The Sea Kings spent the whole day volunteering at the Union Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter on skid row.

The idea to go to skid row came from Kevin Hettig, CdM’s offensive coordinator.

“We try to do three community service events each year to give our team life perspective for those who may be in need, the homeless, the poor, the mentally ill or [those with] special needs,” Sea Kings coach Dan O’Shea said. “This was our second event this year and … [this] was one of the single most impactful days of my life and for the Sea Kings.”

Local football commits

O’Shea said CdM incoming seniors Clyde Moore and J.T. Murphy have committed to Colorado’s football program, Moore as a scholarship player and Murphy as a preferred walk-on player.

“They are best friends,” O’Shea said of Moore, a linebacker, and Murphy, a running back. “Kind of a cool situation for both of them as future Buffs.”

Edison incoming senior quarterback Griffin O’Connor said he has committed to UNLV.

TaeVeon Le, a senior wide receiver at CdM this upcoming season, said he has offers from Iowa State, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Air Force, UNLV, Hawaii and Army.

The 6 feet 4, 225-pound Le also said he has offers from eight NCAA Football Championship Subdivision programs. Five of those are Ivy League schools, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Princeton and Yale, and the others are UC Davis, Utah State and Georgetown.

“I plan to have a better idea of my top five [schools] after the football season,” said Le, adding that he also has a preferred walk-on offer from Stanford.

O’Shea said the other CdM players who have offers are offensive lineman Colston Chacon (Columbia, Delaware State, Stetson University), long snapper Kyle Petrucci (Brown) and defensive lineman Connor Reid (University of San Diego).

Danner is state’s Mr. Baseball

Huntington Beach’s Hagen Danner was named the Cal-Hi Sports Mr. Baseball State Player of the Year for his incredible senior season as a pitcher and hitter.

Danner became the second player from a high school in Huntington Beach to earn the honor, joining Edison’s Henry Owens, who won it in 2011.

Danner went 11-1 with a 1.22 earned-run average. The right-hander struck out 92 and only allowed 34 hits in 63 1/3 innings.

Danner hit a Huntington Beach single-season record 12 home runs and batted .350 with 40 RBIs and eight doubles. He had a .790 slugging percentage, scored 22 runs and walked 23 times.

Danner’s teammate, Nick Pratto, made the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Team first team. Pratto hit .330 with nine home runs, 22 RBIs, six doubles, one triple and 33 runs, to go with a .691 slugging percentage.

As a pitcher, the left-hander finished 5-1 with a save and a 0.99 ERA.

Sage Hill pitcher Brett Super earned a spot on the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Team for medium schools.

Super, who is heading to Pomona-Pitzer College, threw two no-hitters, and finished 9-3 with a 0.77 ERA. He struck out 104 in 82 1/3 innings.

Super batted .418 with 25 RBIs, eight doubles and five triples.
