High School Roundup: CdM, NHHS boys’ volleyball teams clinch league titles

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Northwood

The Sea Kings clinched the Pacific Coast League championship with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 victory on Friday.

Diego Perez recorded eight kills for CdM (23-9, 9-0 in league).

Newport Harbor def. Fountain Valley

The Sailors clinched the outright Sunset League title with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 victory on Friday.

Spencer Lawrence had eight kills and Landon Monroe added six kills and 15 assists ‎for Newport Harbor (8-1 in league).

Pacifica Christian def. Orange County Christian

Sophomore Zander Adelsohn had 11 kills and three aces to lead the Tritons to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 win on Friday.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 13, Woodbridge 5

The Sea Kings used an 11-run second inning to pull out a key Pacific Coast League win on Friday.

CdM (17-5) improved to 9-2 in league to hold a one-game lead over Beckman and a two-game lead over Woodbridge with four games to play.

Reece Berger (two for three, four RBIs, double), J.T. Schwartz (three for four, double), Alex Shadid (one for three, three RBIs), Alex Rosen (one for two, two RBIs) and Nolan Dunn (one for four, two RBIs) contributed offensively for CdM, which plays at University on Tuesday.

Shadid pitched six innings to improve to 2-0.

Newport Harbor 5, Edison 3

(eight innings)

Cameron Mahaffy pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on three hits for the Sailors in the Sunset League game on Friday. He struck out five.

Cade Seabold went one for three with two RBIs, John Olmsetaad went two for four with one run scored and Matt Weiss went two for four with one run scored. Clay Liolis went one for three with one RBI.

Sage Hill 8, Oxford Academy 2

Pitcher Ashwin Chona improved to 7-0 as he led the Lightning to improve to 8-0 in the Academy League.

Chona’s complete-game performance included four strikeouts, one walk, one earned run and four hits.

Mike Helton had a double and two RBIs and Drake Mossman delivered two hits and one RBI for Sage Hill (20-2-2).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 10 Chaminade 7

Senior Katie Hendrix scored four of her five goals after halftime as the host Sailors overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit in their regular-season finale on Thursday.

Laura Tran added three goals, while Adena Rothband (out the previous three and one-half weeks with a concussion) and Caroline Farley rounded out the scoring for the Tars (11-5).

Newport Harbor, which won eight of its final 10 games, will await the announcement of playoff pairings.

Foothill 14, Corona del Mar 9

SANTA ANA — The visiting Sea Kings concluded their regular season in the nonleague road game Friday.

CdM, which completed a 10-0 Pacific Coast League campaign with a 20-3 thumping of Irvine on Wednesday, will enter the playoffs with a 12-6 record.

SOFTBALL

Los Alamitos 13, Marina 3

(six innings)

Amber Baldwin gave the Vikings (11-11, 4-2 in the Sunset League) a strong start, but Marina was unable to fend off the Griffins (21-3, 7-0) after she left the game on Friday.

Baldwin allowed three runs over three innings against the high-powered Griffins offense. The game was tied, 3-3, when she left.

Los Alamitos scored three runs in the fourth, and it struck for seven more in the sixth to open it up.

Ryan Denhart threw five innings to earn the win for the Griffins, who cemented their status as the top team in the Sunset League.

Emily Rush took the loss, although the freshman drove in two runs at the plate. Paige Shafer also had a hit for Marina.
