High school roundup: CdM boys’ soccer wins third straight

Junior David Stephenson and sophomore Matt Katz each scored a goal for the Corona del Mar High boys’ soccer team, helping it beat Woodbridge 2-0 at home and win its third straight in Pacific Coast League play on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Campbell Sheppard recorded the shutout for the Sea Kings (10-4-1, 3-2-0 in league). The Sea Kings have blanked two opponents during the winning streak.

CdM hosts Beckman (2-1-2 in league) on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. The Sea Kings and Patriots trail first-place University (5-0-0).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 59, Woodbridge 47: Junior center Jack Garza led the visiting Sea Kings with 16 points in a Pacific Coast League game on Tuesday.

Jake Hamilton had 12 points for CdM (13-8, 3-2 in league), while Ben Coffman added 11 points.

The Sea Kings start the second round of league at Beckman (10-11, 3-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. The teams are tied for second place, one game back of Northwood (17-5, 4-1).

Pacifica Christian Orange County 54, The Webb: 32: Junior guard Primo Belfiore finished with 13 points in the Tritons’ San Joaquin League home game on Tuesday.

Josh Sims contributed 11 points for Pacifica Christian (7-14, 1-3 in league), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA.

The Tritons face Los Angeles Animo Venice at Vanguard University on Friday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 12, Santa Margarita 9: Sarah Barker and Annie Rankin each scored three goals for the Sailors in a nonleague upset at home on Tuesday.

Karis Couch scored two goals for the Sailors (9-6), ranked No. 11 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2. Santa Margarita is ranked No. 9.

Jessica Lynch, Kili Skibby, Emily Cantu and Linnea Kelly also scored for Newport Harbor, while Erin Ross made seven saves.

Estancia 16, Santa Ana 11: Annie Mitchell had six goals for the Eagles in Tuesday’s nonleague road game.

Sydni White scored four goals for the Eagles (6-5), and Gidget Brestel and Bella Dunham had two each.

Estancia plays at Saddleback in an Orange Coast League game Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Ocean View 10, Orange 0: Chelsea Hardgrave had three goals for the host Seahawks in Tuesday’s Golden West League game.

Iran Enriquez scored twice and Analisa Chavez, Micayla Shook, Taylor Voegeli, Bella Messina and Linda Martinez all added goals for Ocean View (3-10-2, 2-2-1 in league).

The Seahawks play host to Segerstrom on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Corona del Mar 4, Woodbridge 4: Megan Chelf had two goals and an assist for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game on the road.

Ava McKenzie and Julie Bartz also scored for first-place CdM (10-2-4, 4-0-1 in league). Alex Ianni and Sara Neiger had assists, and Shannon Duss made four saves.

CdM, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays at Beckman on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage Hill 2, Whitney 1: Anika Nielsen and Taylor Magliarditi scored for the visiting Lightning in Tuesday’s Academy League game.

Lexi Van Den Bosch had an assist for Sage Hill (9-6-0, 4-3-0 in league), which received strong midfield play from Olivia Lowe and Ashton Carroll. Michelle Hung made three saves.

Sage Hill hosts Crean Lutheran on Friday at 3 p.m.

Huntington Beach 2, Newport Harbor 1: Summer Stewart had a goal and an assist for the Oilers in Monday’s Sunset League game on the road.

Alijah Oliver also scored for Huntington Beach (12-7-4, 3-2-2 in league), and Anna Carleton had an assist. With three league matches remaining, the Oilers are tied for second place in league with Edison, behind Los Alamitos (5-0-2 in league).

Reese Bodas scored for Newport Harbor (7-9-4, 0-5-2).

Pacifica Christian Orange County 2, Samueli Academy 1: Sadie Hill and Abbi Sanders scored for the Tritons in Monday’s San Joaquin League road game.

Brooklyn Motske had two assists for Pacifica Christian (12-1, 4-1 in league).

The Tritons, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 6, play host to Tarbut V’Torah on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Vanguard University.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 48, Newport Harbor 39: The Oilers bolstered their CIF Southern Section playoffs hopes in a Sunset League game on the road Monday.

The Oilers (14-8, 4-2 in league) solidified their hold on third place in league, completing the season sweep of the Sailors (7-12, 2-4).

Junior forward Bella Serrano scored 17 points to lead the Oilers, hitting four of eight three-pointers.

Junior center Daniella Benabou had 11 points for Huntington Beach, and freshman guard Meghan McIntyre added nine points.

Newport Harbor was led by junior guard Lexi Alvarez, who had a game-high 26 points with six steals and four rebounds. She made six three-pointers.

Edison 50, Marina 27: Senior center Ashley Niemand scored 23 points with 11 rebounds to lead the host Chargers in a Sunset League game on Monday.

Senior forward Finley Garnett added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while senior guard Gabby Samiy contributed nine points with three assists.

Edison gets its chance to even the score with first-place Los Alamitos when the Chargers (12-9, 5-1 in league) visit the Griffins (17-5, 6-0) on Jan. 30.

Whitney 46, Sage Hill 38: Freshman center Emily Elliott had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the host Lightning in an Academy League game on Tuesday.

Oxford Academy (19-1, 6-0) leads the league. Sage Hill (12-8, 5-2 in league) and Cerritos Whitney would both need help in order to challenge the Patriots for the league title.

Woodbridge 58, Corona del Mar 45: Junior guard Samantha Uehara scored 30 points with four three-pointers for the visiting Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game.

CdM (8-12, 3-2 in league), which is third in league, visits Beckman (9-12, 1-4) in a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday.
