High school roundup: Ocean View boys’ basketball reaches CIF quarterfinals

Senior guard Paul Head finished with 26 points, five assists and four rebounds, leading the No. 3-seeded Ocean View High boys’ basketball team to a 72-57 win over visiting Beckman in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs on Friday night.

The Seahawks are making their second quarterfinal appearance in three seasons.

Golden West League champion Ocean View (24-4) hosts Golden League champion Palmdale Knight (22-5) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Knight defeated host Lakewood 73-67 in overtime in the second round on Friday.

Ocean View’s Mehkel Harvey had 16 points, nine rebounds, six blocked shots and two steals, while Carson Nguyen contributed 12 points.

Oak Park 70, Edison 62 (OT): Junior guard Kaden Headington made eight three-pointers, an Edison single-game record, and finished with 25 points for the Chargers in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on the road Friday.

Top-seeded Oak Park (21-6) will host Long Beach Poly (21-7) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Jackrabbits pulled out a 79-73 win at home against Riverside J.W. North in the second round on Friday.

David Atencio had 15 points for Edison (21-8).

Murrieta Mesa 64, Marina 50: The Vikings’ season ended at home in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs on Friday.

Marina finished 16-12.

Fourth-seeded Murrieta Mesa (23-8) hosts Redlands Citrus Valley (17-12) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Citrus Valley edged Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon 49-48 in overtime at home in the second round on Friday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Palos Verdes 1, Edison 0: The host Chargers were blanked in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Friday.

Edison finished 16-5-2 overall.

Next for Palos Verdes (19-7-2) is a home game against San Clemente (15-5-5) in the second round on Wednesday. The Tritons advanced with a 4-2 win over Century in the first round on Friday.

Downey 1, Fountain Valley 0: The visiting Barons (9-12-1) exited in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Friday.

Downey (14-7-4) travels to Mission Viejo (8-7-3) for the second round on Wednesday.

Montebello 6, Newport Harbor 2: The Sailors’ season ended on the road in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs on Friday.

Newport Harbor went 10-10-4.

Montebello (19-2-3) has a second-round game at Santa Barbara San Marcos (12-7-2) on Wednesday.

Oxnard 3, Costa Mesa 2: The host Mustangs (10-4-4) lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs on Friday.

Oxnard (8-8-2) hosts Perris Citrus Hills (19-5-6) in the second round on Wednesday.

Oxnard Santa Clara 3, Sage Hill 2 (OT): The Lightning fell in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs on the road Friday.

Third-seeded Santa Clara (14-1-2) advanced to play at Santa Barbara Laguna Blanca (7-2-2) in the second round on Wednesday.

WRESTLING

CIF Southern Section Southern Division finals

Fountain Valley had nine wrestlers advance to the second day of action in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division finals on Friday at Brea Olinda High.

Senior Trenton Ching (160 pounds) and freshmen Dylan Zotea (126) and Max Wilner (145) made the championship semifinals.

Thanh Tu (120), Luis Ramirez (132), Chanson Ching (138), Christian Hernandez (152), Jacob Taub (170) and Nico Damschen (182) are still alive in the consolation bracket.

As a team, Fountain Valley is in fourth place after the first day of the tournament. The Barons have 95.5 points. Victor Valley leads all teams with 127.5 points.

Marina had four wrestlers, and all four advanced on Friday. John McCoy (145) and Danny Escamilla (285) are in the main draw semifinals, while John Finney (120) and Mike McCoy (113) are battling back.

Edison coach Pete Escandon said the Chargers still have Elijah Palacio (132), Jacob Iida (138), Jared Williams (152) and Jason Bradbury (160) alive for Saturday.

Newport Harbor junior Austin Osumi went 3-1 to reach championship Saturday. Osumi, who wrestles at 195, had two pins and a major decision, winning two of his matches after dropping into the consolation draw.

Huntington Beach entered the day with six wrestlers, but all of them were eliminated on Friday.

CIF Southern Section Inland Division finals

Corona del Mar advanced two competitors to the second day of the CIF Southern Section Inland Division finals on Friday at Temecula Great Oak High.

Junior Cole Jensen, a 145-pounder, went 2-1 with a pin and a major decision.

Sophomore Chase Zanck went 2-1 with a pair of one-point victories by decision in the consolation bracket at 182.

CIF Southern Section Coastal Division finals

Locals had a tough time in the CIF Southern Section Coastal Division finals at Westminster High on Friday.

Ocean View’s Noah Edsell fell one match shy of making it to Saturday after drawing Valencia’s Chance Rich in the first round. Rich came into the tournament ranked third in the state for 126-pounders.

Costa Mesa’s Adam Stanley (106) and Raul Mojica (145) each won a match before bowing out of the tournament.
