Locals help Team USA advance in China

Five players with local ties, including three 2016 Olympic gold medalists, have helped the U.S. women’s national water polo team win its three games in group play to advance at the Kunshan Cup in Hunshan, China.

Corona del Mar High product Maddie Musselman, as well as Laguna Beach High products Aria Fischer and Makenzie Fischer, who all won gold in Rio de Janeiro last summer, are on Team USA.

Edison High product Alys Williams and Mary Brooks, a junior at UC Irvine, are also on the team that plays in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Team USA defeated Russia 10-2 on Wednesday, after handling China 16-6 on Tuesday and edging the Netherlands 11-10 on Monday.

Musselman led the way with four goals against China, a game in which Makenzie Fischer scored three.

Against Netherlands, Mussleman had three goals, Aria Fischer added two and Makenzie Fischer had one.

The Kunshan Cup is a preliminary event for the 2017 FINA World League Super Final that starts in Shanghai, China on Tuesday.
