Bicyclist riding on 55 Freeway struck and killed by car

A man was struck and killed by a car while riding a bicycle on the 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of a crash at the transition from the southbound 55 to the northbound 405 Freeway at about 10:50 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

When CHP officers arrived, Orange County Fire Authority personnel were treating a man lying on the ground, according to the CHP.

The man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Orange County coroner’s office identified him as Gilbert Gutierrez III, 32, of Long Beach.

The CHP said the cyclist was riding in the fast lane of the 55 when he was hit by a Mitsubishi.

He was ejected from his bike and thrown onto the windshield of the car, the CHP said.

The woman driving the car was uninjured. She was not arrested or cited.

The crash is under further investigation, authorities said.
