What’s 9 feet, 300 pounds and sweet all over? Resort at Pelican Hill builds a gingerbread village

The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast began assembling its annual gingerbread village on Monday. The 9-foot-tall, 300-pound creation will serve as the backdrop for the resort’s “Kris Kringle Story Time Mingle” running weekends from Saturday through Dec. 24.

A 9-foot-tall village of gingerbread and other sweets is here for the holidays at the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast.

Head pastry chef Jeff Lehuede began assembling the 300-pound confection Monday. The annual attraction typically draws visitors from Orange County and beyond.

The gingerbread village, in the main lobby, will be the backdrop for the resort’s weekly “Kris Kringle Story Time Mingle,” in which children can gather around the display for stories with Santa Claus at 3, 4 and 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The free event begins Saturday and runs through Dec. 24.
