Letter: Glendale Freeway should be extended

Share

Around the beginning of the new year, Christopher Hawthorne wrote in the Los Angeles Times about closing the section of the Glendale (2) Freeway south of the Golden State (5) Freeway. As an engineer and a Glendale resident, I strongly disagree with such a proposal.

The county freeway system was created by diverse, mostly self-serving interests. San Fernando Valley has a very deficient connection to the south, thus to the L.A. airport. The San Diego (405) Freeway is lengthy and crowded. The eastern part of the San Fernando Valley has to struggle on the Pasadena (110) Freeway, which, through downtown LA, is mostly a parking lot in slow motion.

Therefore, the 2 Freeway should not be closed, but should be extended across the Ventura (101) and Santa Monica (10) freeways and connected to the Marina Expressway (90), which already has a connection to the 405. Then, the Marina Expressway should be extended into the Century (105) Freeway. This would greatly improve the L.A. freeway system.

Let me mention another dormant issue: After a half century of bickering among various elements, it is time to extend the Long Beach (710) Freeway to the Foothill (210) Freeway.
