818 Roundup: Black Friday appears to be waning, some local shoppers say

- Another Black Friday arrived in both Burbank and Glendale, though some shoppers say the infamous consumer experience seemed less intense this year.
Burbank school officials agreed earlier this month to spend $639,500 to upgrade the technology at four elementary schools as part of an extended effort to give campuses new equipment with Measure S bond funds.
Glendale police officials are working to fill more than two dozen vacant sworn and non-sworn positions, a number that’s expected to increase next year with impending retirements.
The Hoover Tornado Marching Band recently secured its first California State Band Championship trophy in what is considered among its greatest achievements in recent years.
For one La Cañada resident, Clifton’s Cafeteria — which recently reopened in downtown Los Angeles — is not so much a spectacle as it is a sanctuary, a reminder of home and the family whose hard work and values kept business thriving for seven decades since the first storefront was opened by Clifford Clinton in 1935.
Glendale and Burbank students were not close to perfect in achieving all the fitness standards they were challenged to meet, but their scores fared better than the state average overall, according to results that state officials released recently.
- Since the 1950s, the La Cañada Valley Sun has invited all local fifth-grade students who are studying America’s first Thanksgiving celebration in school to participate in an art contest. The 10- and 11-year-old participants in the contest amaze and sometimes amuse the judging staff with their skills and unique looks at Thanksgiving in America, the theme for the competition.
- More than 200 people were served a hot Thanksgiving meal at the Burbank Corps Salvation Army’s annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
