818 Roundup: First responders train for El Niño storm scenarios

- Dozens of first responders, including 10 members from the Montrose Search-and-Rescue Team, participated in swift-water-rescue training earlier this month in preparation for upcoming El Niño storms that are forecast to hit this winter.
Ten dancers from Burbank’s All-Abilities Dance joined about 5,000 students from across Los Angeles County Friday morning to dance and show off their artwork as part of the Music Center’s 37th annual Very Special Arts Festival, celebrating the achievements of students with disabilities.
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses has named Erika Karen Winter, a student at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada Flintridge, the 98th Rose Queen.
Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday in connection with two residential burglaries in the same Glendale neighborhood, police said.
- Glendale school officials are launching an effort to create a new school calendar that could include a start date closer to the end of August. The move comes after parents complained that the current school year and the next one were much too early for their liking.

- A long-empty Marie Callender’s restaurant is set to be replaced with a Rite Aid following approval from the city’s Design Review Board Thursday.
Officials from the city of Burbank and the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority could soon be heading to Washington, D.C., to meet with the Federal Aviation Administration to discuss, with help from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), their support for a mandatory curfew at Bob Hope Airport.
