Learn about marine mammals

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach is launching a series of art workshops with a message about the environment.

The next workshop will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, when adults and children 6 and older can see the seals and sea lions up close on a docent-led tour, and then create a marine mammal during an art class with Laguna Outreach of Community Arts artist Joan Corman.

Finished art can be taken home and all supplies are included. Cost is $20 for adults, $15 for kids ages 6-17 accompanied by an adult. To register, call (949) 363-4700. Free parking on-site.

Closing the shack down

Laguna Art Museum will host an “Art Shack” open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday before it closes the shack down for good.

The exhibit, presented by Hurley and curated by Greg Escalante, features artists who combine art and architecture through displays of surf shacks, tattoo huts, retro shanties and more.

The open house will feature select artists including Escalante, Wolfgang Bloch and Liz McGrath, who will give tours of their shacks and answer questions about their work.

First Sundays concert series

Laguna Beach Live! will present chamber group Ceora Winds from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday as the first in its “First Sundays” concert series, which will run through May at the Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

LCAD will feature a new exhibit, “Moving Violations: Subversive Animation Art” prior to the concert at 2 p.m. at the gallery.

Composed of flutist Michelle Matsumune, clarinetist Heather Millette and bassoonist Christin Webb, Ceora Winds has performed throughout Southern California and across the country in concert halls, churches, cocktail parties and coffee shops for the last decade.

The trio plays everything from classical standards to jazz arrangements.

My Artist Loft workshop

My Artist Loft, an art education business established earlier this year by painter and photographer Mary Gulino, will offer its first afternoon weekday workshop from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Laguna Beach United Methodist Church, 21632 Wesley Drive, where Gulino will teach aspiring photographers how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements.

A six-week beginning digital photography workshop will start on Thursday, and will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church.

ArtWalk and dance

The Laguna Dance Festival will merge with First Thursday’s ArtWalk with special feature performances at galleries throughout town. Two curiosities meet in “Inquiry,” to be performed at 6:15 p.m. at Salt Fine Art; “Aria,” a trio of movement danced to J.S. Bach will take place at Marion Meyer Contemporary Art at 6:15 and Dawson Cole Fine Art at 6:50 p.m.; Dawson Cole will also feature DTM2 Improvisation Ensemble, “The Dusted Coil” at 7 p.m.; The PGK Project will perform “Streams” at 7:30 p.m. at [seven-degrees].

Songs for smiles

Laguna musician and dentist Ken Garcia will give a “Songs, Smiles ‘n Souls” performance on Oct. 8 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano to benefit the Orange County Dental Society and California Dental Association.

Sponsored by Billabong, Hobie Surf Shop, Sanuk and Coors Light, the show will aim to raise money for kids in need of dental care.

Also performing will be Pasion Gitana and Sasha Evans.

Learn to create festive holiday tabletops

Self-described Rosie O’Donnell of the Martha Stewart set, Lynn Chichi, will have Laguna Beach Garden Club members rolling in the aisles as she demonstrates exciting new ideas for decorating buffet tables for the holidays 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

Prior to presenting it’s favorite interior decorator/stand- up comedienne, the Garden Club will host a social gathering at 9:30 a.m., which will also feature the popular plant and garden boutique for unique garden items at “dirt” cheap prices, followed by a business meeting at 10 a.m.

Calling all women artists

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach is looking for women artists to donate auction items for its semi-annual Women Artists Boutique, which will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at the club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the club and Women’s Resource Center community programs.

The public is invited to enjoy refreshments, socializing and a silent auction of featured artwork, handmade crafts and jewelry created by local women.
