Women seeking empowerment through history are invited to a retreat weekend taking place today and Saturday, at Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive. Joy Ministry, with Anna Krajec and Donna LeClair, host the “Sister Giant” weekend, with a showing of a documentary about the medieval burning of the witches, “The Burning Times,” the fight for women’s suffrage and the more recent efforts of the women of Liberia to find peace. Mountain Climber Appearance

Laguna Beach Books will welcome Kelly Perkins, author of “The Climb of My Life,” at 6 p.m. Perkins was 30 years old when she learned she needed a heart transplant, and after surmounting that challenge became the first heart transplant patient to reach the summit of some of the world’s tallest peaks.
