An 85-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car on Saturday after a Lexus SUV backed into her in a Ralphs parking lot in Fountain Valley.

The Orange County coroner’s office identified the pedestrian as Fountain Valley resident Lavonne Perez.

Officers responded to a call at around 4:35 p.m. on Saturday at 18405 Brookhurst St., where the Lexus had been backing up out of a parking spot when the car collided with Perez, according to a Fountain Valley Police Department statement. Police said the driver then “subsequently drove over her.”

Perez was later transported to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was pronounced dead. The driver, identified only as a 70-year-old Fountain Valley woman, remained at the scene. Police said she is cooperating with investigators.

Police said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
