Costa Mesa prepares for 60th anniversary
As Costa Mesa approaches its 60th anniversary as an incorporated city, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a celebration and a committee to organize it.
The makeup of the Costa Mesa 60th Anniversary Committee, which will work for 10 to 12 months, is still being determined, but it is expected to include representatives from the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitor Bureau, Planning Commission, Senior Center, Sanitary District and school district.
The council also suggested adding representatives from the band booster clubs, South Coast Plaza, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Costa Mesa United, Lions Club and Kiwanis.
The committee’s meetings will be public and subject to the state’s open-meeting laws, with agendas available beforehand.
City CEO Tom Hatch said the city may also invite various other organizations to have their own events alongside Costa Mesa’s.

Welcome, farewell sign
The council also unanimously approved a monument sign at the end of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway north of 19th Street.
The design incorporates a concrete base with steel columns supporting two identically sized meshed steel signs. One reads “Welcome to Costa Mesa” and the other “Thank You for Visiting Costa Mesa.”
Pending Caltrans approval, the letters will be backlit, and the sign may have uplighting.
The approved project will also have additional landscaping and a decorative median barrier wall.
Council members have said they want the sign’s design to be “in line with the evolving downtown and Westside areas,” according to a city staff report, which also said the sign is maintenance friendly with corrosion protection and a graffiti-proof coating.
