Larry Kent Gallup was born in Los Angeles, California on Aug. 8, 1924, the son of Luke and Ethel Gallup. As a boy, his family made many weekend trips to the ocean, mountains and desert which is where Larry discovered his love of exploring the outdoors. He attended high school at California Preparatory School in Covina. The school’s motto was “Enter student and boy, leave scholar and gentlemen.” Larry was very active in school functions and was Student Council Vice President. Larry was the first student at “Prep” to be given the honor of addressing the Sunday Chapel congregation. Larry enjoyed track and field, weight lifting and mountain climbing while attending school. He graduated in 1942.
He then started college at UCLA where he studied education, mathematics, and business administration. His studies were interrupted by World War II. He entered the war as a US Navy Deck Officer and made many trips across the Pacific on the transport ship “USS Herald of The Morning.” After his military service, Larry continued his education at UCLA, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. His first teaching job was with the Los Angeles school district.
While at UCLA, Larry met, Virginia (Ginny) and they were married July 1, 1949. Four years later, they had their first child, daughter, Davia. Then, three more children followed, Lolly, Jon, and Tomm. During this time, Larry was a high school math teacher at Chatsworth High School, Los Angeles and sang in a school staff barbershop quartet. The family enjoyed life in the San Fernando Valley living there for 17 years. Larry was also an advocate of the Los Angeles education system, supporting teachers and their causes. He was an early member of UTLA (United Teachers of Los Angeles) and left teaching to join this organization working his way up to Executive Vice President of Finance.
In 1970, the family moved to Huntington Beach, California. With his wife they started a small dried floral business out of their garage that flourished into a 30 -year small manufacturing company and two gift stores called Ginny’s Broom Closet. Larry and Ginny loved to travel and went to many destinations around the world, including Europe, South America, China, Africa and many more. In Larry’s retirement years, he was very interested in local city politics. He helped organize the City of Huntington Beach’s “Sunshine Week” which advocated “open-door” politics.
