Firefighters doused a blaze that ignited in a Newport Beach duplex early Sunday morning.

The flames broke out around 3:55 a.m. on the first floor of the building in the 100 block of 31st Street on the Balboa Peninsula, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

About 15 firefighters responded and got the blaze under control, but it still caused about $45,000 in damage, according to the department.

Fire officials said the fire started when some combustible items were left too close to the downstairs fireplace. Authorities didn’t specify what the items were.
