Man suspected of having child porn

Newport Beach Police arrested a 61-year-old Santa Ana Heights man

Wednesday night on suspicion of possessing about 100,000 images of

child pornography in his home, officials said.

John Maurice Aldrich was arrested after a criminal complaint was

filed yesterday in Federal Court in Santa Ana, according to a news

release from the U.S. attorney’s office. Possession of child

pornography is a federal crime.

Prosecutors have charged Aldrich with possessing images depicting

minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Detectives, who

searched Aldrich’s home on Sept. 20 after a tip from his landlord,

found two computer hard drives, about 75 CD-ROMs and a stack of

printed material, all of which contained images of child pornography,

officials said.

The charge carries a maximum possible penalty of five years in

federal prison. The case is being investigated by the Bureau of

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Newport Beach Police

Department.

Bullet fired through school windows

Someone reportedly fired a gun at an empty building at Sage Hill

High School in Newport Coast breaking two windows, Newport Beach

Police officials said.

The incident likely happened between 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and 7:45

a.m. Wednesday, Sgt. Steve Shulman said. Two school employees called

the police on Wednesday morning, he said. No one was hurt, as the

school was closed and the building was empty, he said.

“Officers saw that a bullet had hit the south side window of the

school’s gallery and come out through the north side window, breaking

both windows,” Shulman said. “The bullet was found outside the

building near the north side window.”

He said the school has never experienced any similar incident.

There were no suspects, though an investigation is ongoing, Shulman

said.
