Newport Harbor High’s freshmen wrestling team featured two winners

against Sea View League foe Laguna Hills Thursday.

Josh George (119 pounds) beat his opponent, 7-1, while Bryan

Bennett (215) won by fall in the second period.

Jose Anaya made strides, losing, 5-4, to an opponent who pinned

him earlier in the season.

Boys soccer

Frosh/soph

The Corona del Mar High frosh/soph boys soccer team finished 3-1

to capture fifth place in the Sea Kings’ tournament held on Jan. 22

and 29.

CdM (12-2-1, 5-1 in league) defeated Arcadia, 4-0, in the opening

match, but was sent into the consolation bracket that afternoon with

a 1-0 loss to eventual runner-up Paramount.

The Sea Kings defeated Santa Margarita, 1-0, Saturday when

Mitchell Williams scored on a corner kick.

Williams helped propel CdM to a 1-0 victory in the fifth-place

match against Back Bay rival Newport Harbor. Williams scored in the

first half off an assist from Charlie Albright.

Goalkeeper Jaffer Kattan has been a major reason for CdM’s

success, according to coach Zach Panhorst.

Panhorst said 10 of his team’s 12 victories have been shutouts.

Boys basketball

Freshman

The Corona del Mar High freshman boys basketball team defeated

visiting Tesoro, 51-40, in a Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.

Ali Meshkin led the Sea Kings (18-2, 7-0 in league) with 16

points, while Joe Eberhard had 15. Eric Rask chipped in seven points.

Meshkin and J.P. Gormley each had eight boards and three assists.

Junior varsity

The Newport Harbor High junior varsity boys basketball team upset

first-place Aliso Niguel, 62-55, Friday in a Sea View League game at

Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor (16-6, 5-2 in league) avenged a 14-point

first-round defeat at the hands of the Wolverines (6-1 in league).

Junior varsity

Costa Mesa High senior Francisco Bahia wrestled his first ever

match Wednesday at Estancia for the Mustangs’ junior varsity.

Competing in the 160-pound weight class, Bahia scored a two-point

takedown in the first period against his Estancia opponent. Bahia

maintained the 2-0 lead into the third period when his Eagle foe

evened the match with a takedown.

Bahia flipped his opponent and registered a two-point near fall in

the final minute for a 4-2 win.

Girls soccer

Junior varsity

The Estancia High junior varsity girls soccer team tied Ocean

View, 1-1, Jan. 20.

Cheli Ceja scored her eighth goal of the season with an assist

from Stephanie Garcia in the 65th minute. Holding up the rest of the

offense were Nathali Martinez and Laura Ceja.

Ashton Henderson had six saves for the Eagles, Kaelyn Davis played

sweeper and Katie Hamilton and Biance Vargas led the defense.

The team is awaiting the return of Alejandra Cerros who has been

out with an injured ankle.
