Lions split with Whitworth

COSTA MESA ? Erin Ladd and Rachel Bomgren each drove in three runs as the Vanguard University softball team salvaged a nonconference doubleheader split against Whitworth College on Friday.

The Lions (16-15) lost the opener, 7-6, when Whitworth (10-8) scored a run in the top of the seventh inning. Vanguard rebounded with a 7-4 victory in the second game.

Bomgren hit a two-run double in the second inning to put Vanguard (16-15) up for good in the second game. Ladd hit run-scoring singles in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Jenna Willis went the distance for her fifth win of the season.

In the opener, Bomgren had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lions. Krista Mahan had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Vanguard returns to Golden State Athletic Conference action today with a noon doubleheader at Concordia University.
