Suspect arrested for unregistered firearm possessionThe Newport Beach Police Department’s SWAT team arrested a Costa Mesa man Monday morning on suspicion of possession of an unregistered, loaded firearm, which is a felony.
The 46-year-old man called 911 and told a dispatcher he planned to commit suicide at the beach because he was upset about recent divorce proceedings, police said. The dispatcher was able to keep him calm, and at 5:30 a.m., officers located him on the beach at 19th Street.
Crisis negotiators spoke with him for three hours until he surrendered; he was then arrested, and later released to the Orange County Mental Health Department, according to police.

Authorities said Timothy Lysgaard, 45, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound around 11:30 a.m. when he was struck by an eastbound Honda Accord that crossed the center line.
Police said the car’s driver, Luis Ramirez, 36, of Lake Elsinore, was driving under the influence and lost control of the car. Lysgaard died after being thrown from his bike.
Ramirez’s car went over an embankment, and he and his passengers sustained minor injuries, police said.
