Daigle pushes council to take stance on golf course

The Newport Beach City Council will decide tonight whether to take a position against any changes to the use of the back nine holes at the Newport Beach Golf Course, which could become parking or some other auxiliary use for John Wayne Airport.

The land where half the golf course sits is owned by Orange County, and officials are mulling other options because the golf course’s lease ends July 31.

Councilwoman Leslie Daigle has allied herself with the golf course, and she asked the council to take a formal stance. “It’s pro-environment, pro-recreation and pro-people,” she said Monday. “I think we certainly want to take a position on behalf of our citizens.”

The council will also discuss how to proceed with planning Sunset Ridge Park, whether to drop its request to annex West Santa Ana Heights, and a proposed 10-year contract with Stanton-based CR & R Waste Services to collect trash in Newport Coast.

The Newport Beach City Council meets at 4 p.m. for a study session, with the regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, 3300 Newport Blvd.
