YOUTH SCENE:

In the final game of the boys’ AYSO Region 56 boys’ Under-12 division tournament Saturday, the Golden Potatoes came away with a 1-0 victory over first-place Skills That Killz.

The game’s only score game in the fourth quarter, when Benjamin Spetner got possession of the ball at the top of the penalty box and slotted a pass to an open Cooper Kossick, who stuck a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Both the Golden Potatoes and Skillz That Killz move on to Area K tournament play.

Club soccer

NHB Black boys’ Under-18 Gold won the Nomads College Showcase Tournament held from Nov. 28-30 in San Diego. The team, led by Manager Cyndi D’Agostino and Coach Sean Dick, was playing in its first college showcase tournament.

NHB Black finished tied for first place in its pool, with the only loss coming to Stanford Vortex, a U.S. Club national quarterfinalist. Stanford shared first-place with NHB. In the semifinals, NHB took a 2-0 lead on Sonoma County and went on to a 2-1 victory. In the finals, NHB and Crescenta Valley fought to a 1-1 tie in regulation play, but NHB won, 4-2, after two, 10-minute overtime periods.

Softball

Shake-N-Bake, a 14-and-Under team out of South Huntington Beach Fastpitch Softball, went 5-0 the weekend of Nov. 29-30 to take first place in its division at the Turkey Tournament.

Shake-N-Bake took the top seed in its bracket after going 2-0 in pool play. They scored 12 runs without allowing a run in those two wins. Overall, the team outscored the opposition, 28-5, and had a 43-11 advantage in hits.

Shake-N-Bake scored victories over Cypress, Long Beach, South Huntington Beach rivals, Chaos and Lights Out, before defeating Los Alamitos in the division final.

Baseball

The Dirtdogs, an 11-and-Under team made up of players from Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Newport Beach, went undefeated to win its division at the Veterans Day Rings Classic Nov. 16 in Huntington Beach.

In the title game, the Dirtdogs shut out the Manhattan Beach Heaters, 8-0, to win the 17-team tournament.

The pitching efforts of Steven Eldridge, Jake McFetridge, Nick Pratto and Eli Asiata led to back-to-back shutout victories in both the semifinal and finals games. The Dirtdogs offense was led by DJ Eckenwiler, Johnny Garrett and Teddy Stuka, the defense, by Justin Mazzone, Dylan Kaplan, Michael Gates and Michael Murphy.
