Local soapbox racing team takes fifth
Toto’s Escape, a local team of soapbox racers, took fifth place Saturday at the Red Bull Soapbox Race LA.
More than 110,000 people went to downtown Los Angeles to view 40 teams attempt to navigate a tough course and achieve bragging rights and a special NASCAR prize package.
Three teams clocked speeds of more than 45 mph in the race, in which they sped engine-less soapbox cars over jumps and around a 90-degree turn.
A team from San Francisco won the competition, with its soapbox based on a forthcoming video game, Brütal Legend.
Los Angeles team Ludicrous Speed!!! created a “Spaceballsâ€-inspired Winnebago, and took second place.
Third-place Team Speed Racer, from Denver, won the People’s Choice Award.
