Free tax help offered at Susi Q

The Susi Q Senior Center is offering free tax preparation to the community. IRS-trained volunteers will be available to give basic tax help to those with middle to low incomes who file simple tax returns, with special attention given to seniors 60 and older.

AARP’s tax-aide volunteers are trained to assist with filing the 1040 form and the more standard of the schedules, including Schedules A and B. Taxpayers with complex tax returns are advised to seek paid tax assistance. All returns will be filed electronically with no charge to the taxpayer.

Tax assistance will be offered at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Susi Q, 380 Third St. Call (949) 497-2441 to schedule an appointment.

Senior caregiving course offered

The American Red Cross will provide a two-hour course on Family Caregiving of Seniors, including information about home safety, handling personal care, medication precautions, dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and avoiding burnout. The class will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. April 27 at the Susi Q Senior Center. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Estate planning series begins

A free lecture series by local attorney R. Lee Andersen will provide a brief summary of what is involved in estate planning for individuals with modest estates.

The series is called Estate Planning 101: Everything you wanted to know about estate planning but were afraid to ask. The series takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Susi Q Senior Center.

?April 22: Living Trusts/Wills;

?May 27: Power of Attorney for Financial Management;

?June 24: Advance Health Care Directives and POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment).

Birthday bingo party monthly

The National Charity League is sponsoring a monthly Birthday Celebration Bingo event at the Susi Q Senior Center.

All are welcome to an hour of bingo, prizes, light refreshments and birthday acknowledgments, free of charge.

The bingo takes place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of every month in the game room.

Braille Institute support group

A representative from the Braille Institute offers a support group the first from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the Susi Q for those who are experiencing difficulty with daily living activities due to sight loss. Anyone suffering from any degree of vision loss is invited.

Topics include: Staying Connected (April and May “” reading, writing and communicating).

Sally’s Fund expands services

Sally’s Fund has expanded transportation services for Laguna Beach seniors by making individual and group rides available to seniors who use the Community and Senior Center, according to city officials.

In the past Sally’s Fund provided rides to the senior lunch program; the expanded service will offer seniors rides to classes, programs and activities at the center in addition to the lunch.
