Area duo keys USC

Corona del Mar High product Tumua Anae and Newport Harbor alumna Kally Lucas each had key roles Sunday as the USC women’s water polo team won the NCAA title, defeating Stanford, 10-9, in the final at San Diego State.

Anae had eight saves for the Trojans (25-3), helping them win their first NCAA crown since 2004. Lucas was one of three USC players with three goals.

Anae, a senior, was named to the All-NCAA Tournament first team.

Newport Harbor product Nicolina McCall and Newport Beach native Chelsea Silvers, who went to Mater Dei, were also on the winning team.

Stanford featured CdM alums Kate Baldoni and Victoria Kennedy, as well as former Sailors standout Mimi Bury.

UCI’s Brock honored

UC Irvine sophomore Evan Brock was named Co-Pitcher of the Week in the Big West Conference after earning a win and a save in two appearances for the baseball team last week.

Brock allowed two hits and one unearned run in six-plus innings in Saturday’s 8-1 conference win over UC Santa Barbara.

He tossed three perfect innings to post his first save in a 2-1 nonconference win May 11 against UCLA.

Brock is 4-4 with a 2.61 earned-run average and has 40 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings this season.
