Police: Don’t leave valuables in plain sight

Laguna Beach police are warning the community about a rash of vehicle burglaries and thefts from unlocked cars in residential and business areas. In many cases, items that are stolen were left in plain view, providing an incentive for the thief to break into the vehicle, said Lt. Jason Kravetz.

“The thefts are usually occurring after sunset and during the hours of darkness,” Kravetz said. “We are asking residents and those who work in town to take extra precautions to avoid becoming an easy target of these thieves.”

To avoid being a victim:

Remove valuables from your car by securing them in the glove compartment or trunk;

Always lock vehicles and make sure the windows are closed;

Be on the lookout for suspicious persons who appear to be wandering in residential areas and peering into vehicles.

If you are a victim of a vehicle theft or burglary, police advise not to touch anything, and to call the Police Department to make a report.
