Charles Raymond “Ray” Lenahan, Jr.

Ray passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home November 5, 2010 in Corona del Mar. He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Anna Mary “Marty” Lenahan. Ray was born October 25, 1919 in Vincennes, Indiana to Charles Ray and Marcelline DeLisle Lenahan. He was the 2nd to the youngest in a family of 6 children. He is survived by his brother James K. Lenahan of Vincennes, IN and his niece, Suzan Lenahan-Langlois and her husband Chip of Irvine. He also is survived by 10 more nieces and nephews throughout the US.

After High School graduation he briefly attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA before joining the Army in 1942. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers where he was a basic training instructor. After WWII he attended and graduated from Purdue University in Lafayette, IN with an Engineering degree. Upon graduation he lived briefly in Denver before settling in California.

In 1951 while attending a Valentine’s Day Dance he met his wife Marty. They were married December 28th, 1957 at St. Martin of Tours in Santa Monica. After a brief honeymoon in Las Vegas they resided in Santa Monica then Redondo Beach and Newport. They settled in Corona del Mar in 1973.

Ray was a Design Engineer with Douglas Air Craft for 37 years - from 1950 to 1987. At Douglas he not only assisted with design of the inside of several aircrafts but also tested emergency slides, engine kill while in the air and various required safety procedures along side the FAA.

Ray was an active member of the Newport Balboa Rotary Club, St John Vianney, American Legion Post 291 and the Balboa Yacht Club. Ray and Marty loved to travel while owning Design Plaza Travel and were excited to visit 175 countries throughout the world. They enjoyed seeing the various countries, their cultures and meeting the peoples of these countries.

In Lieu of flowers please make donations to the Newport Balboa Rotary Club Foundation or the memorial which has been set up with Hoag Hospital Foundation Heart and Vascular Institute.

Services will be held at St. John Vianney Chapel on Balboa Island Wednesday November 10th at 11am. A viewing will be held Tuesday November 9th from 4pm to 8pm with a Rosary at 7pm at Pacific View Mortuary.
