Man arrested after ramming police cruiser with allegedly stolen car

Irvine police arrested a Santa Ana man Friday after he allegedly stole a car, rammed a police officer cruiser with it, then tried to run.

Ernesto Roger Ramirez, 31, was booked on suspicion of auto theft and assault on a police officer after he was arrested at about 2 p.m., police said in a news release.

Martinez was hospitalized after his arrest because he had apparently accidentally shot himself days earlier and aggravated the injury when trying to escape police, authorities said.

Irvine police found Martinez trying to drive from the 2600 block of Michelson in a stolen 2007 Honda Accord when officers tried to stop him. He rammed the car and bailed out, only to be chased down by officers.

Police said Martinez might have also violated parole.
