Irvine City Council adds to iShuttle service area

IRVINE — The City Council approved Tuesday night a plan to double the service area of the iShuttle, the city’s public commuter program, with two new lines to connect major live and work destinations.

The new routes are planned to begin service in October and will connect the Irvine Station to two destinations: the Irvine Business Complex and the Irvine Spectrum, according to a presentation made by city staff.

The council also approved the purchase of five new shuttles.

Critics of the iShuttle program have argued at past council meetings that the commuter shuttles attract low ridership and are a waste of money.

The Orange County Transportation Authority agreed last year to provide 90% of the iShuttle operations and maintenance for the next 30 years. City staff expect to receive $2.4 million from OCTA in the new fiscal year for the iShuttle expansion, according to the presentation.

In other business, the City Council unanimously approved the ordinance that makes it a misdemeanor for registered sex offenders convicted of a crime against a minor from entering city parks.

Violators face up to six months in county jail or a $500 fine.
