Relay For Life begins Aug. 6

Teams are forming for the 10th annual Laguna Beach Relay for Life.

This year’s event will be from 10 a.m. Aug. 6 to 10 a.m. Aug. 7 at El Morro Elementary School, 8681 N. Coast Hwy.

Form a team with family, friends or coworkers and help support cancer survivors and raise money for cancer research and education. The 24-hour relay includes opening ceremonies and luminarias for purchase in honor of loved ones with cancer.

As of July 13, 22 teams and 118 participants had registered, with $14,680 raised, according to a news release.

Police group seeks participants for mini golf fundraiser

The Laguna Beach Police Employees’ Assn. is looking for team members to join it in Crime Survivors’ miniature golf fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Boomers, 3405 Michelson Drive, Irvine.

The afternoon includes a mini golf tournament, silent auction, an opportunity drawing and awards. The cost is $25, and the event is open to all ages. Participants will be partnered with association members.

Crime Survivors aims to provide resources and support to help victims of crime recover after a traumatic experience.

Alert system helps find missing man

An AlertOC message helped locate a 60-year-old man with Alzheimer’s who went missing July 8, according to City Manager John Pietig’s weekly update of July 15.

The man had wandered away from his home near Pearl and Carmelita streets just after 5 p.m. After an hour-long search, an AlertOC message was sent to 2,126 phone numbers in the area. One of the message’s recipients found the man about 7:15 p.m., and he was reunited with his wife.

OCTA board OKs grant proposal

The Orange County Transit Authority approved a $165,000 grant in June for a right-turn pocket on South Coast Highway at Broadway, according to the weekly update.

The City Council asked staff to submit a grant proposal for the project in January. The city will put in $71,000. The council will discuss appropriation of funds when the grant agreement is ready for official approval.

Charging stations becoming popular

Laguna’s two new electric car charging stations are seeing plenty of activity, according to the weekly update.

In just over a month, more than 70 people have plugged in for more than 96 hours of charging time.

New brunch items at Royal Hawaiian

Royal Hawaiian has unveiled a new Polynesian-inspired weekend brunch menu.

New dishes on the menu created by chef James Harris include Portuguese sausage and eggs with fried rice and green papaya slaw; coconut French toast made with sweet bread, Portuguese sausage and coconut syrup; and a Kalua pork scramble with Swiss cheese, green onions, peppers and breakfast potatoes.

The brunch menu is available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Harris has also launched “Tiki Taco Tuesday,” which is becoming popular with local residents.
