El Pollo Loco lays off 5 at its Costa Mesa headquarters

COSTA MESA — El Pollo Loco has laid off five employees at its Harbor Boulevard corporate headquarters, according to media reports.

The Costa-Mesa based fast food chain laid off the vice president of communications and four other workers from its corporate support center staff of 140 employees as "strategic internal decision to cut expenses within the company," Mark Hardison, vice president of marketing, told the Orange County Register.

Hardison was not available for comment Monday afternoon.

The company reported a loss of $39.5 million in 2010 and $52.3 million in 2009, according a March press release from the company.

"Our focus in 2011 is on building a strong foundation so that when the economy comes around, we are poised for growth," said Steve Sather, president and CEO of El Pollo Loco , according to the March press release.
