An Estancia High School student wants the school district to pay him for medical treatments, and pain and suffering, after he was hurt in a P.E. class.

The male student is seeking $10,000 in damages, according to the claim filed June 27 with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. A claim is the precursor to a lawsuit.

The student couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday. It was unclear if he is a minor.

He was weightlifting in P.E. class May 23 when the incident occurred. According to the claim, he was never properly instructed in how to safely use and remove weights from weight bars.
