Sen. Boxer bets candy on Ocean View victory

If the Ocean View Little League wins Saturday in the Little League Baseball World Series, it will likely mean celebrations around town. And one fewer box sold by a downtown candy merchant.

Sen. Barbara Boxer announced Friday that she and Montana Sen. Max Baucus have joined in a “friendly wager” over their states’ teams, which will face off Saturday for the United States Championship. If Montana wins, Boxer’s office will buy a box from Surf City Candy at 126 Main St. and ship it to Baucus.

Her prize if Ocean View wins? An assortment of Caramel Cookie Waffles from Billings.

Spokesman Zachary Coile said Boxer’s office chose Surf City Candy because it was specific to Huntington Beach.

“We asked our LA area office to check into local candy and sweets makers, and they identified this candy store, Surf City Candy, as a good example of a local sweets maker,” he said. “It just captures some of the flavor of Huntington Beach.”

The store could not be reached by phone Friday, but Coile said Boxer’s staff had contacted the management to inform them of the wager. The senator also tweeted a message Friday afternoon wishing the Ocean View team luck in Saturday’s game.
