The teenager charged with murdering a 19-year-old man during a fight in a Huntington Beach park will be tried as an adult, the Orange County district attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Jesse Shockey, 16, of Garden Grove, is charged with one felony count of murder and a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.

Shockey is being held on $1-million bail and is scheduled for continued arraignment Jan. 17 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Shockey is accused of getting into an argument in Lark View Park with the friends of Dylan James Austin about two weeks before the killing, according to the D.A.’s office.

About 9:40 p.m. Dec. 21, Shockey is accused of returning to the park with his friends, armed with a knife. He is accused of getting into a physical fight with Austin and stabbing him fatally once in the chest.

Austin, a Huntington Beach resident, was transported to UCI Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly afterward. He was the city’s fourth homicide victim this year.

Police arrested Shockey and three others during a vehicle stop about 10:30 a.m. Thursday near Garden Grove Boulevard and Gilbert Street in Garden Grove. Officers also recovered a bloody knife Thursday morning near the scene of the crime, Lt. Russell Reinhart said.

The Huntington Beach Police Department is still investigating. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Det. Patrick Ellis at (714) 536-2895 or Supervising District Attorney Investigator Randy Litwin at (714) 347-8492.
