College continues services for veterans
Coastline Community College will continue providing services to veterans at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.
The Coast Community College District Board of Trustees on Sept. 5 approved an agreement with the base to continue the Orange County One-Stop Center, which provides veterans and their families with career and transition services.
“By providing these services, on-base in an environment they are familiar with, and offering assistance to them through a network of their peers, we hope that more veterans will take advantage of these career resources,” board President Jim Moreno said in a prepared statement.
The agreement gives Coastline Community College office space on base at 4522 Saratoga Ave. The center, with the Orange County Workforce Investment Board, helps veterans with training, job placement assistance and referrals to career and community resources.
Coastline will also start offering transitional skills workshops, seminars on using social media to find jobs and résumé development. Funding came from the federal Workforce Investment Act.
“The resources provided ... are critical to our veterans,” Sallie Salinas, the center’s administrative director, said in a prepared statement. “The programs offered are a catalyst for successful transition and bridge the gap between military and civilian life.”
Coastline opened its first One Stop Center in 1998 and the center has been at Los Alamitos for nearly four years, said college spokeswoman Michelle Ma.
Coastline in 2010 also opened its own Veterans Resource Center, where veterans can use a computer, get mental health and other service referrals, or receive academic counseling.
