Costa Mesa police pursue, fire at suspect
A Costa Mesa police officer fired his gun Tuesday night at two suspects, one of whom was wanted on suspicion of kidnapping.
While investigating the alleged kidnapping, Santa Ana police discovered the last known address for Juan Manuel Reyes, 31, was in the 3000 block of Coolidge Avenue. They alerted Costa Mesa police.
Reyes is suspected of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in her 2007 Toyota Camry on Aug. 30 and taking her for 11 days to various motels around Santa Ana, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
The woman escaped and contacted Santa Ana police. Early Tuesday, Reyes was found in the Camry in the 2100 block of East First Street in Santa Ana, but he managed to evade officers during a high-speed pursuit, Bertagna said.
Costa Mesa officers went to Reyes’ address, where he and another person fled in the Camry, Costa Mesa police said. The pursuit led police and the suspects to Baker Street and Harbor Boulevard, where the squad car and Camry collided.
An officer fired several rounds from his handgun at the car, police said.
The bullets struck the car, but neither suspect.
The pursuit continued and ended near Sunflower Avenue and Main Street. Reyes and the passenger were taken into custody. Costa Mesa police did not release the passenger’s name.
